Celebrating Routes2Success role-model: Bayo Igoh

Last month Bayo Igoh, an Executive Coach & Mentor and dedicated role-model for our Routes2Success programme, was featured on the distinguished Tedx Talks series.

Giving his first Tedx talk on the theme “You don’t pick role models…they pick you” he outlines the significant, but often unacknowledged, impact that role models have on so many people’s development. He shares the story of the role models who helped shape his formative years.

Sharing why he was inspired to do this Tedx, Bayo commented:

You’re left thinking about how and why role models, inspire, motivate, and provide a positive example to follow.

My story is of how role models often choose you, knowingly, unknowingly, consciously, or subconsciously.

I got the gist of my survival instincts, values, thoughts and why I am here and who I am today, as a result of the role models that came into my life, by accident or by design. They came into my life and through their actions, gave me a sense of purpose, direction, ideas, challenges, right and wrongs, they gave me choices, on who and what I might become.

Mine is a story of being blessed with strong family values, commitment, ambition, courage and dreams of being the person, I am today.

What I would like you to go away with today is to think about how you chose, to be a role model consciously or subconsciously to others, directly or indirectly.

Earlier, we asked Bayo who was his inspiration to become a role model himself for our Routes2Success programme. He responded:

“My late father inspires me. He had drive, passion, and a strong work ethic. He set a positive example by consistently working towards his goals and achieving success. He was nicknamed ‘The Teacher’ , because he would inspire others by sharing his knowledge and experiences, and by being a role model for what can be achieved through hard work and determination. Additionally, his positive attitude and ability to overcome obstacles was contagious to friends, family and colleagues, encouraging others to do the same. Immigrating to the UK in 1964 with my mother, he was not afraid to take risks and make mistakes, this has proved to be an inspiration for others to be more confident and open-minded. His great life has been that of a great man who led by example and inspired others to be their best selves.”

Thank you Bayo for sharing your story, and the incredible work you are doing to inspire, support and mentor others!
