A Journey Towards Inclusion: Young, Black and Talented invites young Black men aged 16-24 and leading employers from London’s global Construction, Technology and Finance companies to meet and share insights.

This event will be held at the iconic Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors in Westminster on Wednesday 28th September, 3pm – 6.30pm.

It will have two distinct but connecting segments. Although Part 1 is intended more for employers, young people are welcome to sign up to attend both parts if they wish.

Please arrive at 3pm for registration. The event will begin at 3.30pm sharp.
Booking is essential.

Action for Race Equality will also be providing £20 Amazon gift vouchers to compensate young people up to the age of 24 for their time and travel to the event. Please contact Moving On Up’s Project Support Officer Victoria Atanda for details.

What’s in store?

A Journey Towards Inclusion: Young, Black and Talented will provide a platform for young Black men to share their individual stories of navigating their pathways to employment, alongside industry experts such as Jacobs Partnerships, Profusion Media and more, who will be speaking of the journey their companies are taking towards becoming more inclusive workplaces.

Attendees will also hear from Dr Debbie Weekes-Bernard, Deputy Mayor for Communities and Social Justice, who will be in attendance, and from the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, himself through a special video message.

We are also honoured to be welcoming Giovanni Rose for a unique poetry performance on the day. Giovanni is a talented young Black poet from Tottenham and was named the winner of Foyle’s Young Poet award in 2021.

By bringing employers and young Black men together in the same room, we hope employers will learn some of the challenges young Black men face when seeking quality London Living Wage employment. We also hope they will take steps to remove these challenges through the lawful act of positive action, which simply means treating one group more favourably to help them overcome disadvantages.”

Jeremy Crook, Action for Race Equality CEO

Part 2 offers young people the chance to join ‘breaking-bread’ style group discussions with leaders, followed by a 121 networking event to understand the specific pathways and opportunities currently available within different companies.

See Eventbrite for more details.

Young people attending will have the chance to
  • Find out about opportunities and pathways to the Construction, Technology and Finance sectors including apprenticeships, internships, secondments, coaching, mentoring, shadowing, webinars and more by speaking to employers.
  • Understand how companies are making workplaces more inclusive and supportive spaces for young Black Londoners.
  • Speak directly with employers and senior leaders to tell them what’s important to you.
  • Meet and network with other young Black men building their careers in London.
Employers attending the event will
  • Hear best practice and learn how companies can contribute to addressing and overcoming structural barriers in the workplace to improve hiring and retention of young Black men.
  • Get the chance to make a positive difference to the lives of young Black men by committing to taking positive action.

A Journey Towards Inclusion: Young, Black and Talented forms part of the Mayor of London’s Workforce Integration Network Programme, which is supporting young Black men aged 16 -24 years into living-wage employment in London.

It is kindly supported by DiverseCity Surveyors.
